Beady Eye's eagerly anticipated new album will be censored in British supermarkets because of the prominent nipple featured on its cover.
The band's release BE features cover art shot by celebrated 1960's Pirelli calendar photographer Harri Peccinotti, whose wife is the partially-clothed woman on its front.
But while the shot of Peccinotti's wife in mock repose is tasteful enough, supermarkets are up in arms over her prominent nipple – one of a string of setbacks the album's distributors have faced over recent weeks.
“We had to cover the nipple up for sale in supermarkets,” a Beady Eye record label spokesperson told NME. “They wouldn't stock it as it was. That goes for our advertising as well. We have had complaints online requesting our digital ads be pulled as they have been flagged for adult content.”
The British Retail Consortium – mouthpiece for all British Supermarkets – has since confirmed the move.
“Supermarkets take their responsibilities to customers very seriously,” said a representative. “They have long been committed to following joint industry guidelines and have also taken their own independent voluntary action to ensure that any publications or other items which may cause offence or be seen by children are displayed discreetly.”
Earlier this year Beady Eye frontman Liam Gallagher raved about Peccinotti's cover art for BE.
“It is sexy. I'm always up for a '60's boob, man. A '60's nipple is never going to get a knockback off me. It's definitely not sexist. It's sexy, it's a nipple you can bring home to your mother.
It's not porn, is it? It's classic, man. Classic nipple.”
